Windblown Grid

acrylic on panel, 2013-2014, 48"w x 48"h

On the one hand I use traditional quilt patterns as a springboard to create geometric abstract paintings. On the other hand I make negatives of a handmade five-foot square net using a bygone photography process as an investigation of the subtle presence of the grid structure in both painting and fibre art. Taking the soft, pliable and organic aspects of quilting and netting and directing them into rigid and geometric paintings or mysterious photograms highlights the similarities and differences between the two approaches of art making. This process translates the materials into a new language that is questioning, critiquing and celebrating the dialogues of the art institutions I am part of.
