Gesso on metal, 2016, 18"w x 18"h

Moving to the city from a small town, I fantasize untouched landscapes and question human ideals. These gesso paintings on metal consider the human position within the landscape. Intersections of trees and hydro wires, captured through personal photographs, reflect our disconnection from nature in urban landscapes. Notions of industry, degradation and the juxtaposition of valuing the environment—while acknowledging our impact on it—are conveyed. Metal ore, found in nature and processed by humans, rusts to indicate that it is an active surface reclaiming itself, despite prevailing exploitation.
