Synesthesia is a neurological condition where one sense triggers the automatic, involuntary impression of another, thus allowing people to “see” music or “taste” words. Having grapheme-colour synesthesia allows me to perceive colours for every letter or number. I became intrigued with how differently each person may perceive the world after receiving confused reactions to my favourite colour, the number five. The paint I applied around the subjects’ eyes are their first names in the colours I perceived while reading them. The feeling of being watched or judged by an inanimate object while doing the same (making the viewer the observed as well as the observer) sparks an awareness of the existence of observation and a consciousness of individual perception.
