They stand safely beneath the overgrown trees as observers rather than participants. They are safe in observing the normal world because their line of sight becomes a trajectory that pierces an unfamiliar parallel world. Those inhabitants having a picnic are as oblivious to the deviant world as innocent victims waiting for their killer in a horror film.
