Consensual II (Metal Collar)

Brass, 2017, 11"w x 3"h x 15"d

Growing up in the Ukraine during the Soviet regime, I had to wear a uniform to school—a brown dress. The collar I could attach to the uniform was the only individual item to differentiate myself from others. We could choose the fabric and style but were confined to defined parameters and shape. As my sole means for self-expression, the collar also existed as a kind of restraint. Traditionally, the purpose of a collar is to adorn, or to represent wealth and status. I explore it as a mutable object using various types of metal to ironically convey its perceived duality: freedom and control.
