Painting No. 1

2011, Mixed media on plywood, cinderblocks, 96"w x 99.5"h x 10"d

My structure, material, and process are derived from uncanny visual circumstances in the architecture of our constructed environs. There is a futility in our attempts to construct our environments for efficiency while the same systems are doomed to corrode and fail. This painting is the result of marks made while repeatedly flipping two 8′ x 4′ plywood boards. This was inspired by the displacement and replacement of construction fencing during the development of a site. The inevitable wear and tear of these structures represent the struggles between the civilized world and that which we cannot control.
