Contingency

2013, Oil on canvas, 30"w x 40"h

My paintings explore ideas of impermanence in relation to the human subject. Growing up with physical illness, I contemplated the degree of value of the human body. I dig deep into my subjectivity and attempt to show these relations through my work. I use the figure as an object to connect the human consciousness with external circumstances. In my effort to execute technical expertise, I convey a sense of oneness between external and internal realities in my paintings. As the Buddhist sutra states, “All conditioned dharmas are like dreams, phantoms, bubbles, shadows!” I use techniques of mimesis to convey the nonmimetic. The nonmimetic notion in my work becomes more real than that which can be emulated.
