Oxytocin is based on the atomic structure of oxytocin. The molecule is rendered in the tradition of organic chemistry, with dark lines representing chemical bonds and white lines corresponding to hydrogen. Oxytocin itself plays a role in inducing a mother to labor; it is the first step in the painful process of giving birth. With the added dimension of oxytocin as a trust molecule, the painting is a symbolic promise of faith in the journey toward personal growth. Depicting it at the molecular level indicates a hyperrealistic understanding of discomfort as a necessary part of the process.
