How to Keep Your Hands Occupied at Cranbrook Academy of Art

2012-2013, Paper, Dimensions variable

My art is about irony, humor and the contradiction of society’s norms. Through investigating relationships, I question the artist’s role to observe, inform or critique the inconsistencies in human behavior. Irony and humor soften my critique, disguising my opinions to keep the viewer at a distance. I use techniques and materials that connect to my cultural heritage and family history. Both my mother and grandmother were professional tailors; their labor was meant to cater to the needs of others, while my labor fulfills my own needs. I am taking on an inherited role in making art, manipulating the material’s function both to convey and veil my thoughts of nonconformity.
