MFA 2015
silicone, fabric, plastic, 2014-2015, dimensions vary
The objects in Unstable Still Life exist between definitions. They are on the comfortable scale of cups, lunch bags, bars of soap, without being any one of those things. They are flaccid and hard, animate and lifeless. The cuff could be a child’s sleeve or an adult’s sock, but the idea of it being either is absurd. Sheets of silicone wrap like towels that could never dry hands. Color, too, can mislead, and in conjunction with texture and form, it defamiliarizes the familiar and gives access to the strange. These objects undermine the rubric of success and failure and instead offer an engagement based on play.
