I am continually interested in how typography creates and defines identity. Being an avid car enthusiast, I often use car culture materials and techniques—brake lines, concrete, specific nuts/bolts, methods of hand-polishing—in my work. “Vacancy” is a typeface based on hand-lettering found on auto repair shop signs along Woodward Avenue in Detroit. The typeface was then applied to a series of cast objects, including these two street signs.
