Rules for Painting

2008, Oil on linen, 72"w x 92"h (diptych overall)

The painter Ralston Crawford said that he had many masters and wasn’t afraid to look up to them, that his indebtedness to many artists of many times was indeed great. Crawford was one of many artists I looked to for help in finding my own way to make works that distill a response to the stimulus of various art forms. Through a series of studies of other painters’ palettes, I found a set of rules that became a system for painting and in each painting I have found the language for the next, an open language for expanding expressions of visual experiences in simple forms and saturated color.
