Employee of the Month is both a celebration and parody of the desire to do good work within a socioeconomic system that too often praises the ability to consume over the ability to produce or serve. Trade-offs are inherent when operating within any system—something is gained from our participation while other things are lost. This is an ongoing negotiation in need of periodic revision, and it’s imperative that my work facilitates conversation around this topic. Rather than stating some ideologically oversimplified answer, I prefer that questions about meaning and cultural value come to the fore to initiate conversations in which a broader and more balanced understanding is achieved.
