Acrylic and oil on canvas, 2016, 48”w x 84”h
My work is an investigation of rural sanctuaries and mythological utopias. Using paint as a tool to explore the relationship between reality and abstraction, between memory and intuition, I embed myself in the cathartic, historic practice of escape through landscape. Personal photographs taken while hiking the Pembrokeshire Coast in Wales are steeped in romantic sentimentality and act as initial imagery. A vision of utopia is constructed through a projection of personal desires onto the landscape, expressing possibilities beyond existing realities.
