Printmaking is my primary medium. It allows to me to develop ideas by printing an image onto different surfaces, to repeat and to transform it. It allows me to put together image and text, to work in a more narrative way and combine sets of images. Artist’s books allow me a more narrative structure to explain ideas or visual stories. “Things have their own life” (las cosas tienen vida propia), said the gypsy Melquiades in one of my favorite books One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien Años de Soledad) by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Storytelling is a way to give extraordinary meanings to ordinary facts of life. Artist’s books and visual poetry allow me to work with very elemental objects and give them a new dignity. Stories are open fields where viewers may participate and create their own stories.
Nada te turbe, nada te espante, todo se pasa are two verses of Santa Teresa of Avila’s poem. I was concerned about the owl as attribute, which is a symbol for wisdom, death or redemption. I printed on a Gampi paper because of its apparent fragility and the difficulty to control it when I printed the plates. Nada te turbe, nada te espante is about staying calm in the uncertainty, as I feel when I am printing on that kind of paper.
