Effete Architecture is a “weak architecture,” pushing against a material language of allowability. It seeks to deconstruct where syntax favors power, where the collective mind punishes the formally and structurally unexpected. It challenges usual alignments of “strong” and “weak,” of who makes what thing. Here, Detroit unfurls itself. Buildings and in-between spaces disintegrate into alternate palettes of use, unfamiliar to the development-driven mindsets of professional practice. I cannot tell Detroit what it is or what it needs, but I can integrate. Here begins a degeneration of assumption, making space for the new. What is building? Model? Drawing? Sketch? Diagram? What is object? Other? Self? Collective? What is use?
