I grew up in a steel belt city, around hardworking, earnest people. My visual perception of the world developed by exploring rail yards and staring through the windows of city buses. When I see objects and places of industry, I think of their histories. I imagine the faces behind them, and I’m reminded of my loved ones who were steelworkers, bus drivers, sanitation workers and truck drivers. My work pays homage to them. The lines, textures and vivid colors of their environments mirror the struggle revealed in their imperfect bodies and the lines on their hands and their faces.
