Fashion trends enable an appropriation of “ethnic cultures,” contextualizing traditional adornment in contemporary style. I attempt to understand this through jewelry. By appropriating designs of African adornment and textiles, I am able to create textural experiences that allow the wearer to relate, to an extent, through roughness, scratchiness and discomfort.
