My current paintings are influenced by Rorschach inkblots. These were used as a psychological test in which subjects’ perceptions of inkblots were recorded and then analyzed using psychological interpretation and/or complex algorithms. During the 1960s, psychologists used this test to examine a person’s personality characteristics, emotional functioning and underlying thought disorder. I took this idea and created my own versions of inkblots, which I like to call paint blot tests. I’m interested in how our brains create imaginative figures on abstract paintings.
