Oil and cold wax on canvas, 2016, 62"w x 36"h
I look at the structural elements of painting and reveal the process through the act of painting. The conventional components that construct a painting become formal qualities of my work: raw canvas, primer, palette and paint. I focus on the materiality of these elements and accentuate them through revelation and repetitive accumulation. I leave areas of raw and primed canvas visible, use the surface of the painting to prepare and mix colors, and allow for a buildup of paint through repetitive and reductive line application. In turn, the paintings become dimensional rather than pictorial.
