The Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, PC, First Female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada

mixed media on paper, 2014, 29"w x 40"h x 1"d

Women are slowly climbing to positions of leadership in Canada. Firsts are still happening. This series of portraits documents that change and promotes the achievements of notable Canadian women, particularly those who have reached a first in their profession or vocation. In keeping with the traditions of public portraiture, each figure appears full length and slightly larger than life. The portraits have been rendered in a calligraphic style using india ink and light colour washes. They are on three-meter scrolls of watercolour paper, gently referencing techniques of fashion illustration and tapestry art. The intent is for the works to be accessible and to leave a strong graphic impression. The series promotes a healthy dialogue and serves as a tangible measurement of the current state of women’s advances in Canada. It fosters awareness of the important milestones that have been attained in the last four decades and is meant to inspire the next generation of young women.
