2012, Mixed media (encaustic, yarn and paper), Dimensions variable
My work references the formation of pearls, continually coating sites of irritation until a precious object is formed. I first begin with a drawing of a knot or tangle, because they are perfect symbols of how complex family, home and childhood can be. Often a relationship is enmeshed, matted and dense: there is no way to truly untangle that kind of mess. Encasing these three-dimensional drawings in wax is my form of resolution. Each of my built drawings is itself a pearl, a part of a greater collection. As a whole, this body of work is an abstract representation of an intangible duration that is hugely personal.
