oil on canvas, 2013, 30"w x 24"h
This portrait of my friend and colleague was inspired by the coincidence of two astronomical phenomena that occurred on February 15, 2013. On this day the Chelyabinsk meteor unexpectedly struck the Earth, in Russia, while scientific eyes were focused on the predicted approach of the Duende asteroid. The crosshair in the painting points to Duende, the lesser-known asteroid of the day. The star-sky image was a great challenge to paint, and the painting as a whole reflects my interest in doubling images and experimenting with color and technique.
