oil on canvas on panel, 2014, 36"w x 48"h
Each generation of artists is tasked to realize the art of its generation. Painting is full of history and language. Connecting within this dialogue is the challenge, shaping and informing the fabric of our cultural identity. For me, it is in the moment of discovery when the subject is revealed as I divide the canvas, negotiate space and employ a combination of formal considerations—expressive and organic marks, line, geometry, architectural forms and complex spatial relationships. My canvas acts as an arena to house these modes of expression where painterly languages compete for dominance. The forms within these spaces are treated as unique living and evolving spaces. As I construct, negotiate and respond, a dialogue forms and fuses with the painting.
