I am often inspired by my surroundings, but while living in the city I found I struggled being so disconnected from nature. I longed to be in a more natural environment surrounded by trees. I started collecting newspapers and found discarded paper around the city. I would layer the paper with paint and build up a thick surface. Then I would begin various refining processes to alter the painting. I found that once I was finished, my pieces started to resemble the growth rings and knots found in trees—I was creating my own “urban nature.”
