dirt, ceramic and found objects, 2012-14, 32"w x 7"h x 5"d
I made these dirt objects after learning about a game played by elementary school students in Japan. During recess, and with a teacher’s sanction, children make mud dumplings using playground dirt and water, taking great care in forming and drying their objects. After the balls of dirt are dry, the kids engage in contests to see whose dirt dumpling is the hardest by dropping one ball onto another’s ball to see if it will break the target or be broken by it.
