I have always been fascinated by the moment in climbing when you reach a high point and are able to view the expanse of terrain that was previously hidden by the face of the mountain. The feeling is odd, like being on a diving board and feeling the impossibility of connection with the water below you. This is the jamais vu experience of the wilderness that I draw on so heavily in my work, the psychological experience of the familiar becoming alien.
