2012, Oil on canvas, 96"w x 16"h
My work is about color, mark-making, materiality, process and transformation. I start with found images that are relevant to my cultural experience. Through the act of painting, the reference image becomes transmuted in different ways each time. Thus, by transforming an image into an emotional, abstract work, the act of painting becomes my subject. I think of my paintings as representations subverted into abstract landscapes because they develop through mapping shapes and building topographic layers. The outcome is often somewhere between the sublime and the grotesque.
