Hejab

heat on subway transfers, 2008, 22"w x 33"h x 1"d

There are several forms of the hejab in Muslim society. These different forms depicted in my work show different interpretations, some of which are a sense of identity, others obstacles that women have to endure. I illustrated the faces of ordinary and distinguished women with the hejab. These women conquered obstacles in their lifetime to move forward. My inspiration for this work comes from the 20th-century Iranian poet Parvin Etesami. Her words are inscribed in Farsi surrounding the subway tickets in this work. I applied heat-emitting objects as painting instruments on heat-sensitive subway transfers.
