In this piece, I express visually what it felt like for me to become happy and healthy again after a period of depression. The colours emerging from the darkness reflect the awakening of parts of me after feeling subdued and depressed. I chose to work with ink initially because it references the use of ink images that are sometimes used for diagnostic testing. I was trying to create a dialogue between how art and the perceptions of images have historically been associated with mental health. I have symbolically reclaimed this process of diagnosis by making my own ink painting and adjusting it to suit the transition I am experiencing right now, from depression to balance.
