The concept of album cover art has been a mainstay in the production of consumable music, acting as a visual symbol to identify and distinguish itself as a specific product. The art appearing on an album cover is essentially a brand for both the music and the musician. The imagery used on the album cover tries to both include the music it represents within a specific genre, making it relevant to its target audience, and attempts to stand out from the rest of the music included in that genre. This body of work explores the idea of branding in professional music. I’ve categorized and abstracted album covers in an attempt to gather a better understanding of how music is branded according to different musicians, genres and eras.
