2012, Encaustic and canvas on panel, 36"w x 48"h
I am interested in evoking psychological and emotional states through my work in encaustic, an alchemical medium using
beeswax combined with oil paint. Incongruous materials introduce a new dynamic, their interaction either shattering or reshaping the surface. My work also concerns systems of institutional power and takes a critical view of patriarchal imagery commissioned by the Catholic Church and used to construct a controlling, idealized social model for women. I reference iconic paintings to gain insight into their use as tools of social oppression, particularly of unwed mothers who were coerced to give up their infants for adoption.
