2010, Oil and paper on gessoboard, 36"w x 36"h
Often we hope for strength in things of so little power – a muscle man who is simply a product of curvy lines. What could he do but fly on the wall of my studio trying to manage the plants in the vase and the tiny animals on the table? He is merely funny. It is the real things that have the power – yellow, plaid paper, wood. The hero is lucky to be there. I have tried to tie narrative to the conceptual nature of still life in this painting. With one approach, you might ask what the hero is going to do; from another, you might ask how he is caught in this world of real things.
