DSM-IV, Euphoria

encaustic on panel, 2013, 18"w x 18"h x 5"d

The series Not a Codeable Disorder looks at the newly formulated text in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Using fragments of revised definitions of such disorders as schizophrenia, bipolar and euphoria, I seek out the human spaces within the changing clinical definitions. Incising and extracting text is like an excavation. The lettering is pulled out of a casement of layers of paint to reveal the definitions in different typefaces at differing depths. Fonts and colors are chosen for their historical and social connotations. The chaotic combination of elements is meant to contrast the recognizable elements of form and the purposeful obfuscation of language. Layers of heavy encaustic paint reference the layered complexity of the human mind and our attempts to codify it. The pieces themselves layer/nest within each other.
