2009, Oil on canvas, 24"w x 36"h
This painting was created via my participation with the Canadian Forces Artists Program and is based on photos taken during training for a combat mission to Afghanistan. Flare Launch (and much of my practice) looks at the aesthetics of violence and the inherent beauty of power as well as the inability of an image to carry the dialogue of moments with high emotional stakes. Is it possible to allow viewers access to the thoughts and emotions of soldiers who are preparing to fight in a war? I try to depict the gap between lived experience and its potential dissemination to a disconnected viewer.
