oil paint on wood panel, 2015, 16"w x 12"h

Through oil paintings of surveillance footage screenshots, I explore the mundane nature of the everyday and the themes of isolation and loneliness that characterize the passing moments of urban life. The figures present are in liminal states, unaware of their being captured. They are as isolated from their environments and each other as they are from the viewer. An element of narrative ambiguity is present—these figures are caught in fragmented moments from the wider narratives of their lives. Using technologically captured imagery, an additional element of separation is present as the technological mediation results in our viewing these people in a nonreciprocal connection. The faceless figures act as surrogates for onlookers, who may empathize and identify with the figures but not connect with or contact them.
