Through personal analysis of experience as both a Pakistani woman and a Muslim in the West, my work explores the increasing attention brought to images of veiled women circulating through media sources. This includes the appropriation of traditional garments in pop culture, fashion and propaganda, which helps to create gender stereotypes. My interests lie in the exploration of feelings—such as isolation and anxiety—associated with embodying the burqa in today’s society. My work is, therefore, influenced by an influx of symbolically charged images discovered through media sources.
