When I was working on building my portfolio during my senior year, I believed I could show people who saw my artwork what it might be like to experience living with various mental illnesses. In this piece I portrayed schizophrenia, inspired by a story my cousin had told me: A boy in his math class had schizophrenia. The way he solved equations, he described, was by watching diamonds explode in front of him. The different facets reflected numbers that gave him the correct answer. I wanted to capture how he felt inside a reality of his own, still free.
