This was the result of a class project: to find a random person on Facebook and create a portrait from the profile photo using any charcoal medium. I chose this particular profile photo because it provided me with an excellent opportunity to work on creating an atmospheric art piece rather than my traditional linear pieces. During the creation process, I created a 4″ x 4″ grid to aid me with proportions, using a non-photo blue pencil. I also utilized a variety of charcoals, mostly compressed, standard, and vine, in order to capture the stark contrast between the individual and the icy background.
