Nobody Can Escape Their Own Shadow is of a portrait of a relative whom I’ve never met. However, her story of running away from an abusive family and oppressive island community to find stability in the new world reflects my own coming to terms with family and duty. I hate to finish with a cliché, but history does indeed repeat itself. Reclaimed wood, found photographs and brushstrokes that suggest mold reflect her history and my present frustrations. Ultimately, the work explores the loss of and a nostalgia for a family dynamic that’s never been.
