Everybody needs a cheerleader—someone to tell you you’re doing great—and a drill sergeant, someone to tell you to stop messing around and get back to work. Part of growing up is cultivating these voices for oneself. “You are winning” is a positive message, but it also means that you are engaged in a competition, which can be positive or negative. When you are winning, you have not yet won. It is liminal. The next moment is undetermined.
