This diptych was originally conceived as a comparison between two different experiences of the same space. In one you have the spacious environment and in the other you have the congested, both presented from the perspective of someone who is present in those spaces. However, while the two situations are considerably different, one can still manage to feel alone in both. While in one situation you have a crowd of people, they are all avoiding eye contact. With this lack of any human interaction, each person in the crowd may feel just about as alone as they’d feel in the empty space.
