The image depicts a familiar moment, but as the details disintegrate into brushstrokes and paint, the figures become strange. We rely on memory to define who we are. We rely on photographs to capture the moments we need to hold on to. When both of these fade, we are left with nothing but a displaced sense of nostalgia.
