egg tempera on paper, 2014, 12.5"w x 15.5"h
I paint from direct observation of natural foliage and cultivated plants, often wandering the aisles of nurseries looking for the forms that speak to me. I have always been particularly drawn to plant iconography and draw inspiration from the paper cut-outs of Henri Matisse. I paint movement, color and gesture, attempting to uncover nuances in the plants themselves. I use color as a vehicle to simulate the energy emanating from nature.
