My work is an exploration of cultural identity through a combination of different visual languages. I was able to explore a new visual language by challenging the traditional perceptions of Chinese ink paintings and bringing them into a contemporary setting. Much like how the definition of Canadian identity has become a mash-up of multiculturalism, my experience became an amalgamation of styles and a search for a balance, which can only be described as an intuitive feeling. In searching, the works became a re-creation of pre-existing ideas that in turn became a creation of a
new visual language. The exploration of cultural identity in my paintings became my own personalized construction of an identity to claim as my own.
