BFA 2015
acrylic and oil paint, 2015, 36"w x 24"h
In painting images of the island country St. Vincent, I am exploring personal heritage, history and belonging from the vantage point of an outsider to the space. As a Canadian, I visit the island feeling as if I am surveying my own heritage. I have the desire to belong to the culture, but simultaneously I recognize that I am always unable to fully access or understand the nuances of the culture. My paintings are an exploration of the uneasy tension that I experience from being an insider and an outsider simultaneously. Enticing color and tropical flora are interrupted by the paint application that disrupts the image, removing specificity of place to create a sense of inaccessibility.
